Civics Curriculum
SENATE BILL 358 states that beginning 2012 – 2013 school year all 6th – 8th grade students must show proficiency in at least one semester of civics instruction. This means a 70% or higher score.
This course shall include instruction
1. The roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local governments;
2. The structures and functions of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government; and
3. The meaning and significance of historic documents, including but not limited to the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence, and the United States Constitution.
I must be old because when I was in school we were taught this stuff. It is important as a citizen to know the functions and limitations of government in order to avoid a loss of liberty. Frankly, I believe logic should also be a mandatory course.
